The
2008 YDCCC Treasure Hunt
Report
by Dave Simpson
Well
if you missed this one, you certainly missed one of our better club days
out. The day was ideal for classic runs, sunshine and blue sky (what
organisation). However if you were expecting a gentle saunter around a few
unused roads, forget it!

Some eight cars with eager crews gathered at the start to be issued with
clues / instructions and set off at intervals in generally a northerly
direction, with the exception of Ken and Pat who went north and was then
seen returning south, they must have had some doubts and eventually got it
together. Alan had attempted to get us into new country, i.e. away from our
familiar Yorkshire dales and into lower
Tees
dale and he certainly succeeded.
The
route was close on a hundred miles and quite testing, well you wouldn’t
want it to easy now would you. On top of that the clues were certainly devious
and a few of them took quite a bit of finding, that is if you found them at
all ! I know my navigator and I didn’t find them all, in fact I don’t
think anyone got a hundred percent. The field got very spread out during the
morning phase, but not to worry we thought we could regroup at the lunch
stop where everyone would arrive more or less together, how wrong could you
be ? Having taken several wrong turnings I thought we would be last at the pub, but on arrival there
was only
Gary
’s Spitfire to be seen. Eventually a few more appeared but after about an
hour there was still cars missing.
Alan had arranged pie 'n' pea’s for lunch and
the rather strange landlord was getting a little worried about his pies
getting overdone. However eventually all the pies were eaten by the right
people and onward we went.
Heading back towards
Barnard Castle and on to Whorlton Lido I never did work out what a
seven day object was (weak bridge), nice one Alan! Heading home the clues
got no easier, via the A66 and villages around Moulton and Middleton Tyas
and eventually back to the sec's stately home where Kate had the Barbie
going and bangers & burgers on the grill, the fridge well stocked with
cold beers and wine. Very welcome I can tell you.

The winner of this mini marathon was eventually
decided by our impartial organiser Alan who grilled some steaks for Steve
and Val while the rest of us had burgers.
All joking aside, congrats to Alan for organising
an excellent day with some great clues to get the old grey matter working.
Also congratulations to all who took part for leaving the fridge empty of
ale when you left, well that’s the only time to go home isn’t it?
The
club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the
event Alan Hardcastle (Event Organiser) and Dave & Kate (for hospitality).
