2017 Richard Culmer’s Evening Run - 5th July 2017
Report by Richard Culmer
The weather had been a bit unsettled in the days prior to the run but
having had words in the right places it was fine for us on the evening.
There was a great turnout and 15 cars headed out from the Marage car
park in Thirsk on yet another magical mystery tour. In addition to many
of the usual “suspects” we welcomed new members Dave & Eva Shuttleworth
and David & Karen Rider. Some of the soft tops had their hoods down but
there were a few wimps who didn’t chance it (no names but you can tell
from the pictures!).
The run was about 43 miles long and took in Felixkirk, Kilburn, Wass,
Ampleforth and Gilling East before heading out into the deep countryside
around Scackleton and Terrington Bank top and returning via Brandsby,
Oulston and Husthwaite.
The run ended at The Old Oak Tree pub in South Kilvington. Bill Burton
was a golfing widower so had gone solo but managed not to get lost.
Jonathan had one of his junior navigators with him, who did an excellent
job and got dad round the circuit. 24 members sat down to an excellent
meal; steak and ale pie just beat Hunters Chicken as the most popular
main course. Jim and Tony had to be prised from the landlord’s garage to
get their meal – he runs a Mk 1 Escort rally car and was working on it
that evening.
From the comments made everyone enjoyed the evening. We even managed to
find a few roads that people hadn’t been on before – don’t know how much
longer we’ll manage to do that!
Thanks to Richard and Jean for organising another excellent run enjoyed
by all who took part-Ed.
