The 2008 Cobweb Run

Report by Dave Simpson

Tops up, brollies up, bloody fuel's up, good job the lunch was good value.

Sunday the 27th April certainly did not dawn bright and clear but a good turnout of seven cars filled with enthusiastic and hardy souls gathered for our first club outing of the year. The forecast was not good, but never the less off we went to blow the winter cobwebs away. But not until yours truly who had done the route got a good earful from Bonnie for sending us up Sutton bank, I figure she must have had a bad experience on said hill before, but all her fears were unfounded as Al’s trusty MGA sailed up without without fuss as did all the cars.

Over the top and onward down to Helmsley we went, with a quick regroup in Pickering before the steady climb up on to Fylingdales Moor. The view from the top as we went over the Hole of Horcum which is usually one of the best in this part of the moors was certainly not up to standard owing to the low stormy clouds and mizzley rain, however things got a little better as we progressed and the day did brighten up a bit.

There seemed to be a bit of confusion as to the route as we navigated around Whitby and needless to say the route organiser took some unfounded criticism, can’t imagine why, can’t these people read simple instructions? However every one eventually arrived at the Tiger Inn in Easington after traversing the coast road through Sandsend and up Lythe bank. Here we stopped and enjoyed just about the largest Sunday lunch that could be found anywhere in Yorkshire and probably beyond. Our hosts at the Tiger Inn were extremely friendly and after a starter and main course of huge proportions I lost a bet that certain members could not tackle a sweet of lemon meringue of doorstep size proportions, well done to them. But would they fit back into the driving seat of an MG again? Or would they be going home in a wheel barrow?

After this excellent lunch we made our way back to town / home, A sound start to the club season and everyone who attended enjoyed the day out, the usual wit and sparkling repartee where all present and correct as usual, and so we progress to the next event in the calendar.

If you missed this one, be there for the next one, or you may well miss another extravaganza from your club.
