2022 Gordon Bulmer Memorial Run
Report by John Gill
We have quite a few new members and they may not know why we hold the
Memorial run each year. Gordon was a long time active member of the club
entering his trusty old black MGTD in most events. Sadly, Gordon passed
away in 2015 after a short illness. His son Stuart had started to come
on runs with Gordon acting as his navigator. When Gordon passed away
Gordon and Lucy asked if they could organise a run in his memory, the
run was very successful and we have been able to hold the run every year
since.
This year we were blessed with some fine weather, the entrants assembled
in Thirsk and the usual chat and comradery was abundant. Mike Cowan was
working in the morning but managed to arrive in the nick of time as they
say Angela and I also cut it a bit fine. We had one no show, Sue and
Owen Robinson did not make the start, we hope both they and their car
are ok. We had a few crew changes for this run with Drivers Navigating
and Navigators Driving. Jim Clark drove Kevin Browns MGB GT with Kevin
navigating, Janet Clark was driving the Mazda with Julie Swales
navigating and Chris Redman driving with Andy as navigator.
Stuart Bulmer was on hand to hand out the instructions, he had a special
set for Jackie Cowan, she does not know her left from her right, I
confess I am the same which results in Angela waving her arms about to
indicate which way I am supposed to turn.
The run was 100 miles in length and basically headed south then east and
back round to Northallerton. We passed several villages I had not been
to as we headed on the back roads from Sowerby to the A64 just past
Flaxton. Here we turned left, the A64 was as busy as usual but most
drivers were courteous and we zipped into the traffic. After 500 yards
we were off again and followed country roads to Howsham. At this point
we had about five cars following us, our friends live in the middle of
nowhere just outside Howsham and we were tempted to turn off and go for
a cup of tea but thought the other cars might have followed us and that
would have given our friends a surprise. We headed on via Kirkham Abbey
and back across the A64 to a welcome break at the Yorkshire Lavender
Centre at Terrington. I think most crews stopped for a cup of tea and a
stretch of the legs.
Back on the road we headed for Coxwold and on to Kilburn where the views
of the White Horse were amazing. We followed the country roads to the
east of the A19 before cutting across the A19 to Brompton and Paul and
Tina’s farm. When we arrived, Paul acted as car parking attendant and
neatly got all the cars parked. Sheila and Tony did not do the run they
went straight to the farm and got all the puddings ready and what a
selection there was.
The BBQ was underway the burgers and sausages being ably cooked by J
Thompson Family Butchers.
There was much chat and laughter during the BBQ, which was enjoyed by
all. Another very successful YDCCC run with no speeding tickets this
time! Thanks to Paul and Tina for providing the venue, Sheila and Kate
for making the puddings. Finally, thanks to Stuart and Lucy for
organising the route under difficult circumstances.
